The sports leadership program at the University of Washington differs somewhat in its emphasis. The university offers students an opportunity to pursue a master of education degree with an emphasis in intercollegiate athletic leadership. The program is designed to last approximately 12 months, beginning with an intensive summer session and orientation. Once the summer session is completed, students pursue studies online and return to the campus quarterly for intensive weekend sessions. Students must complete 48 credit hours to graduate from the program. Of these, 24 credits are earned during the initial eight-week summer term. The program focuses on three core fields of competency: leadership development; budgeting, finance and sports administration; and colleges, sport and society.

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) also offers programs in sports leadership through its Center for Sport Leadership. VCU offers a master of education degree with an emphasis in sports leadership. This program can be pursued through on-campus full-time studies or part-time through distance education. The school also offers a joint-degree program allowing students to obtain a master of business administration (M.B.A.) in conjunction with the M.Ed. degree. This option gives students a significant advantage in the job market by providing them with training in the business field, which can be important in the sports industry or in the business world in general. The M.Ed. degree requires students to complete 36 credit hours, while the dual degree program requires a total of 60 credit hours that are a mixture of business courses and courses from the sports leadership education program.
