Florida State University (FSU) offers a PhD in sports management through its Department of Education. This doctoral program is accredited by the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA) and is geared toward helping students enter a career as a secondary educator or researcher in the field of sports management.
To be admitted into this program, students must meet the following requirements: have a 3.0 upper division grade-point average; have a master's degree in a related field; obtain a faculty sponsor; submit three letters of recommendation, a current resume, and a letter of intent; and send GRE scores and transcripts from all previously attended universities and colleges.

Ohio State University's PhD in sports management is offered through the School of Physical Activity and Educational Services. This program was established in 1978 and can be completed in three or four years. Graduates have several career options, including working with professional sports teams and leagues, university athletic departments and sports regulatory organizations.
For admission into Ohio State's sports management PhD program, candidates must meet the following criteria: have a master's degree in a related field; have a grade point average of 3.3; have a combined score of at least 1000 in the quantitative and verbal sections of the GRE; and a score of at least 3.5 on the GRE writing section.

The United States Sports Academy offers a doctor of education degree in sports management that is one of only four programs approved by the Sport Management Program Review Council. The program lasts 66 semester hours and includes courses such as Ethics in Sport, Sports Marketing Research, Sports Entrepreneurship and Labor Relations in Sports.
Students who wish to enter this doctoral program must submit the following: a narrative qualifying essay; $100 application fee; a completed application for doctoral degree study; college transcripts with grades and graduation dates; combined GRE of at least 950, Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) score of 500, or a Miller Analogies Test (MAT) scale score of at least 390. Test scores cannot be older than five years.
