Sports Management Programs in Ontario

Also known as sports business or sports administration, sports management covers a wide variety of academic arenas including sports psychology, marketing and business governance and ethics. Sports management graduates are involved in organizational administration in professional and collegiate sports organizations, as well as agents, researchers and high-level coaches. Three Ontario universities offer degrees and certificate programs in sports management.

    • Brock University's 4-year undergraduate degree program in sports management is a specialized program focusing on the theory, principles and practices of business in the sports industry. The program utilizes high-profile guest speakers and field research to expand the learning opportunities of students. The third year of the program is focused on a field study tailored to each student's expertise and interests. The programs fourth year is dedicated to an internship at a sports business related firm to bolster industry experience prior to graduation.

    Laurentian University

    • Laurentian's School of Sports Administration offers a 4-year interdisciplinary degree in sports administration grounded in the foundations of organizational management and sports administration. Coursework is inclusive of a wide variety of seminars focused on accounting, organizational financial policy and macroeconomics. The role of corporate sponsorship in sports is also examined. The program includes an aggressive 8-week internship with a sports organization in the student's final year.

    York University

    • York University's sports administration certificate is contingent on the completion of degree-credit courses that are combinable with a full degree program or completed independently. Guided by the York University Sport Administration Association, the certificate program places particular emphasis on developing team leadership skills and networking ability. Courses on marketing, promotion, decision making and problem solving are also required.
