The Community Leadership Program at the University of Colorado at Boulder is two years in length and runs consecutively beginning in the fall semester of each year. Throughout the entire program, students participate in academic learning and community involvement experience. The program begins with an orientation in housing, health care issues and human rights and proceeds to four weeks of experiential learning through one week of wilderness learning, two weeks of serving the Native American community and one week living with the homeless. In order to integrate their learning experiences during this time, students make regular journal entries and participate in group discussions. The remainder of the program builds upon the issues learned in the first month of the program through integrated classroom learning and community volunteering. Students develop the skills necessary to fulfill leadership roles within the community (see Reference 1).
