The Colleges in West Michigan

There are over 200 public and private colleges and universities, community and career colleges in Michigan. While many colleges are located near Detroit in the eastern part of the state, the western cities of Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Holland are also centers for educational activity. In addition to the many public universities and colleges in the western part of the state, there is also a wide range of religiously-affiliated colleges.
  1. Lake Michigan College

    • Lake Michigan College is a regional, two-year college located in Benton Harbor, Michigan. (The college also has a campus in Napier, Michigan.) The college teaches more than 7,000 credit and non-credit students annually. This number includes students from more than 30 regional high schools, who earn college credit through LMC's Early College Program. The college has no dorms, but more than 50 percent of students are enrolled full time.

    Hope College

    • Hope College is a private college in Holland, Michigan, affiliated with the Reformed Church in America. The school, which was opened by Dutch immigrants in 1851 as the Pioneer School, shares its 90-acre campus with Western Theological Seminary. The liberal arts college enrolls about 3,000 students annually, and offers 90 majors. Students can earn a Bachelor of Arts, Music, Science or Science in Nursing.

    Calvin College

    • The Christian Reformed Church in North America founded Calvin College in 1876 and named it after famous reformer John Calvin. The private college, which now enrolls 4,000 students, has an emphasis on a liberal arts curriculum. Most of its students (94 percent) receive financial aid. The school, which is located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has just under 100 academic majors.

    Southwestern Michigan College

    • Southwestern Michigan College's 240-acre Dowagiac campus offers students attractive living conditions in a small-town setting. Regularly ranking in the top 10 percent of the nation in student course success (according to the 2007 National College Benchmarking Survey), the college offers affordable tuition and generous financial aid. While most students are from Michigan, about 7 percent of the student population comes from Indiana.
