What Are the Top Community Colleges in Michigan?

Michigan is home to 28 community colleges, each serving a different region of the state. Community colleges can be a cheaper and quicker option for those who cannot afford the time or cost of traditional college. These colleges are considered the top because they not only offer associate degree programs and professional certificates or a chance to move on to a four year university, but they provide a wide range of academic choices.
  1. Northeastern Michigan

    • Alpena Community College is located in the town of Alpena in north Michigan, near Thunder Bay. It is a two year school the offers programs for students who want to go on to finish a degree in college or those who want a vocational degree. If you go to Alpena Community College, you can transfer to a four year college after two years. Vocational degrees include medical coding, corrections officer certification, and car and auto repair. As of February 2011, Alpena Community College enrolls 1,065 full time students and 977 part time. Costs begin at $92 per credit for in-district students and are up to $184 per credit for out-of-state students.

    Southern Michigan

    • Glen Oaks Community College is located in Centreville, just north of the Indiana border. It is a two year college that offers majors in computer sciences, auto repair, nursing and more. Glen Oaks also offers distance learning for students who cannot come to campus but have access to computers. However, not all courses are available to distance learners and will vary from semester to semester. As of February 2011, Glen Oaks enrolls 686 full-time and 881 part-time students. Credits cost is based on where you live, beginning at $80 per credit for those who live in the same county and higher from outside the county.

    Southwestern Michigan

    • Kalamazoo Valley Community College is in Kalamazoo, a city in the southwestern part of the state. Kalamazoo Valley Community College offers two year degrees and certificates. Among the numerous degrees offered are accounting, fire science and nursing. Certificates available include paramedic, machinist, coaching and firefighting. As of February 2011, Kalamazoo Valley Community College enrolls 4,667 full time and 6,538 part time students. Costs begin at $76.50 per credit for in-district students and increase up to $170 per credit for out-of-state students.

    Central Michigan

    • Kirtland Community College is in north-central Michigan in the town of Roscommon. Kirtland Community College offer both Associate degrees and certificates. Among the programs available at Kirtland include law enforcement, carpentry and cosmetology. The college is also home to the Center for Digital Education where students interested in learning graphic design and fine art. Kirtland Community College was also the first college east of the Mississippi River to network various parts of the school such as Registration and Financial Aid. As of February 2011, Kirtland Community College enrolls 710 full time and 947 part time students. Credits cost is based on where you live, beginning at $81.50 per credit for those who live in the same county and increase from there to $220.50 per credit for international students.
