Berrien County, Michigan Colleges

Berrien County sits in the southeastern part of Michigan, directly abutting Lake Michigan and directly across the lake from Chicago. The county has several higher-education institutions, and they differ drastically. Andrew University, in Berrien Springs, offers a more-traditional college feel with grass-lined quads, but is heavily influenced by its administrator, the Seventh-day Adventist Church. In the same county, Twin City Beauty College has operated for 50 years in St. Joesph, training men and women in hair, skin and make-up techniques. The county also features Lake Michigan College, Southwestern Michigan College and many other institutions.
  1. Andrews University

    • Andrews University is affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The 1,600- acre campus is 12 miles from the small village of Berrien Springs. Until 1960, Andrews was named Battle Creek University and offered only a seminary program. Since then, the school added its College of Arts and Sciences, College of Technology and School of Business. In 2007, it introduced its architecture program. Average tuition costs as of 2011 are roughly $30,000, and the school offers financial aid.

    Lake Michigan College

    • Lake Michigan is a two-year, junior college that focuses primarily on core requirements and liberal arts education. It's located in Benton Township, and has regional campuses in Benton Harbor, Bertrand Crossing and South Haven. Most students attend Lake Michigan to fulfill core requirements before attending a four-year college or university. Lake Michigan charges $150 per class hour as of 2011 and offers financial aid.

    Southwestern Michigan College

    • Southwestern Michigan is a two-year, public school. At the schools' two campuses -- one in Dowagic, and the other in Niles -- the students take general-education courses in preparation to transfer to four-year institutions. The school advertises itself as a cheap alternative to starting immediately at a four-year school and has small class sizes. Southwestern offers a variety of tuition fees: $93.75/class hour for in-district residents; $120.50/class hour for in-state residents; and $131/class hour for out-of-state residents, as of 2011.

    Twin City Beauty College

    • For 50 years, Twin City has operated as a beauty school for men and women. Located in St. Joseph, its students learn cosmetology, the study of trends in make-up, hair, nails and skincare. Twin City also takes in high school students for a vocational program and doubles as a functioning hair salon. Twin City offers some financial aid, up to $500, as of 2011, and encourages its students to seek federal and state financial aid as well.
