Colleges in Western Michigan

The western half of Michigan features a wide variety of two-year and private colleges. Many of these schools are located near major regional centers like Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids and Muskegon. The mixture of rural areas and Lake Michigan coastline in the region attracts students from Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin.
  1. Muskegon Community College

    • Muskegon Community College confers two-year degrees in a variety of fields like anthropology, graphic design and respiratory therapy. Students can look through archival collections, books and newspapers maintained by the Hendrik Meijer Library. The College Success Center works with students in need of tutoring, writing assistance and university transfer information. Faculty and students can head to the Frauenthal Foundation Art Center for concerts, art shows and guest lectures. This college is located on a 111-acre wooded campus within minutes of Lake Michigan.

    Northwestern Michigan College

    • Northwestern Michigan College issues two-year degrees in 60 academic fields, including accounting and theater. Students can work with reference librarians and access online databases at the Mark and Helen Osterlin Library. The NWC University Center assists students with four-year university transfers, graduate school applications and professional certifications. The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College hosts art exhibits, guest lectures and film festivals. Student organizations like the NMC Film Club and the Engineering Club allow students to pursue their interests away from class.

    Kalamazoo College

    • Students at Kalamazoo College pursue four-year degrees in 27 academic areas like chemistry, religion and media studies. The Upjohn Library features reference books, journals and computer stations to assist students with class projects. This private college requires all students to live in one of six residence halls for their first five semesters. Students stay busy outside of the classroom in clubs like the Environmental Organization and WJMD student radio. The Hicks Student Center at Kalamazoo College hosts concerts, comedy shows and job fairs.

    Calvin College

    • Calvin College is a private college affiliated with the Christian Reformed Church. Students can choose majors and minors in 100 academic areas ranging from African studies to health education. The Hekman Library contains thousands of books and journals as well as computer labs. This west Michigan school operates seven residence halls and four apartment buildings to house a majority of students. Tutoring services and study skill sessions are available at Hiemenga Hall. Calvin College provides funds for myriad student organizations, including the Running Club and the Center Art Gallery.
