The two-year associate in science degree program offered at Capital Community College teaches students the procedures and skills necessary for pre-hospital emergency care. Students learn the role of the first responder paramedic in car accidents, violence-inflicted wounds, childbirth emergencies, heart attacks and more. The curriculum is delivered in combination with practical experience in paramedic internships. Courses in the program include anatomy and physiology for emergency care, general psychology, microbiology, principles in sociology and emergency medical services education.

Connecticut College Emergency Medical Service offers the emergency medical technician - basic level (EMT-B) course in both the fall and spring semesters. Graduates must pass the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians certification examination. The course requires 180 hours of coursework which includes lectures, assignments and practical experience. Upon completion of the basic level course, students may apply to the paramedic internship. The program runs for two semesters and provides pre-hospital and emergency training at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital. Seminars in the first semester familiarize students with the role and skills of a paramedic. Students learn one-on-one during the second semester by shadowing a paramedic throughout 12-hour shifts.

Goodwin College offers a number of courses in collaboration with Hartford College to prepare students for a career in medical emergency response. Students learn advanced life support services in emergency medical care, advanced patient assessment and trauma care. Special emphasis is placed on the importance of clinical decision-making skills to equip students with the mental preparedness to operate effectively in the field. Clinical placements take place concurrently with classroom learning to encourage students to develop newly learned skills and techniques.

Naugatuck Valley Community College offers a six-credit emergency medical technician basic course that prepares students for EMT-B national certification. The course provides fundamental knowledge necessary for assessing patients in pre-hospital emergency situations. Students learn to recognize medical symptoms and to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), maintain patient airways and perform in rescue operations. Hands-on practical experience is obtained emergency room clinical rotations. Students participate in emergency care of adult, child and infant patients throughout these rotations.
