Several universities are found in the greater Memphis area, including Christian Brothers University and the Memphis Campus of the University of Phoenix. East of downtown, the University of Memphis confers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in a variety of academic and research fields. The university also houses an education program and a law school. Downtown, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center offers programs in health sciences, medicine, dentistry, nursing and pharmacy. The city is also home to Crichton College, a liberal arts college, and LeMoyne-Owen College, a historically black college.
Southwest Tennessee Community College was established through the merger of Shelby State Community College and State Technical Institute at Memphis in 2000. It offers fully accredited programs in a range of degree and certificate programs. Courses are accessible from six campuses and centers throughout Memphis, as well as an additional site in Somerville, Tennessee.
Southwest Tennessee Community College offers a range of programs leading to associate's degrees and technical certificates. Subject areas include accounting, arts and science, business studies, criminal justice, education, engineering, nursing, fine arts, hospitality management, humanities and information technology. The college also provides distance education, as well as corporate training and non-credit continuing education for those wishing to enhance skills and complete hands-on training.

In addition to their application, prospective students must submit their high school transcript or equivalent and any college transcripts. For certain degree programs, students may be required to submit ACT test scores (if the applicant is under age 21) or COMPASS test scores (if the applicant is 21 or older).
