Lancaster County, Pennsylvania is approximately 65 miles east of Philadelphia in the eastern part of the state. The county is home to a small number of public, religious and private, non-sectarian post-secondary institutions.     Elizabethtown College

    • Elizabethtown College is in the Lancaster County community of Elizabethtown. The Church of the Brethren founded the school in 1899, and since that time, its enrollment has grown to around 1,900 students. The school offers an average class size of 25 students, with a student to faculty ratio of just 13 to one. U.S. News and World Report ranked the college fifth among all regional colleges in the northern United States in its "Best Colleges of 2011" ratings. 53 majors are offered, and the largest programs are business administration, communications and elementary education. The college offers semester- and year-long study-abroad opportunities as well as a travel-study semester program in Washington, D.C. Internships are available in most majors, and every department offers an honors program. Around 96 percent of all students at Elizabethtown benefit from financial aid, according to the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges.

    • Millersville University of Pennsylvania is a public institution in the Lancaster County community of Millersville, which is about five miles west of the city of Lancaster. The college has an enrollment of more than 8,400 undergraduate and graduate students. It received the 67th-place ranking among all regional universities in the northern United States in the U.S. News and World Report "Best Colleges of 2011" ratings. The college is best-known for its School of Education, which offers bachelor's and master's degrees in fields like teaching, industrial technology, special education and sports management. For-credit internships and paid cooperative work placements are available in many fields, and the college offers study-abroad opportunities in nine countries. About 80 percent of freshmen and 74 percent of continuing students at Millersville are financial-aid recipients, according to the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. Pennsylvania residents receive tuition discounts.
