Diversity Leadership in Community Colleges

Diversity is a common issue faced by many community colleges, especially in leadership positions. There are many organizations that encourage diversity in college. One of these organizations, the Montgomery County Diversity and Actions Team, from Montgomery College in Maryland, states the mission as, "The goal is to ensure that the students, administration, faculty and staff recognize and welcome diversity as an integral part of life". Some of these organizations offer great leadership opportunities at community colleges.
  1. Commission on Hispanic Affairs Organization

    • One organization that focuses on diversity leadership at community colleges is the Commission on Hispanic Affairs Organization. This organization has groups on two Oregon college campuses, Lane Community College and Central Oregon Community College. One of the primary mission statements of the organization is to "encourage Hispanic representation on state boards and commissions." The primary community college building for this organization is at Central Oregon Community College. The group at this college has a primary mission to promote diversity on and off campus, especially in leadership positions.

Waubonsee Community College Diversity Leadership Council

    • Formed in 2008, Waubonsee Community College's Diversity Leadership Council, in Sugar Grove, Illinois, provides courses in promoting diversity in college leadership positions. In fact, last year more than 550 participants signed up for diversity training. The Diversity Leadership Council even matches new college employees with a "diversity ambassador", in an attempt to showcase Waubonsee's community and diversity leadership opportunities. The Council has even partnered up for courses taught by members of the national Anti-Defamation League.

Coe Community College Diversity Leadership Scholarship

    • Every year, Coe College, a community college in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, hands out 10 full tuition scholarships to outstanding young academically oriented students. The scholarships are called the Diversity Leadership Scholarships, and are given to students that show leadership in the field, and are members of minority groups on campus. According to Coe College, economically disadvantaged students are especially encouraged to apply for the scholarships. The goal of these awards is to "enrich the student body and enhance the campus community by attracting bright and talented students who will provide leadership and service"

    Michiana Diversity Leadership Initiative

    • The Michiana Diversity Leadership Initiative (MDLI) is a highly active 12 session curriculum focused at a minority population. Represented on Ivy Tech Community College's campus, in Terre Haute, Indiana, the MDLI is a hand-on learning experience where present day minority leaders of companies, departments and classes answer questions from participants. The goal of the MDLI is to develop business and political leadership skills in a diverse population, ultimately educating future community leaders. MDLI requires participants to apply to join, and the tuition fee is $100 for 12 weeks.
