Small Catholic Colleges in Southern States

The nation's southern states are home to several small Catholic colleges that offer associate and bachelor's degree programs as well as some master's programs. The small size of these colleges allows students to get to know their peers, professors and religious advisers well in a close academic community.
  1. Southern Catholic College

    • Southern Catholic College is a private, four-year college that was established in 2000 and enrolled its first class in 2005. The school is located about an hour north of Atlanta in Dawsonville, Georgia. As of 2009, Southern Catholic College had about 250 undergraduates working toward Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees in seven different fields, including English, history, philosophy and sacred theology. The college gives financial aid to 95 percent of its students.

    Christendom College

    • Christendom College, a Catholic liberal arts college, was founded in 1977 in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. As of 2009, the school had about 400 undergraduates and 75 graduate students. Undergraduates can work toward Associate in Arts (AA) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees in early Christian studies, English, history, philosophy, political science or theology. The college also offers minors in liturgical music and math. Graduate students work toward the Master of Arts (MA) degree in theological studies. Undergraduates have the opportunity to spend a semester in Rome during their third year.

    Christian Brothers University

    • Christian Brothers University, a private, Roman Catholic University, was founded in 1871 as the first institution of higher education in Memphis, Tennessee. As of 2009, the school had about 1,450 undergraduates and 350 graduate students. The university offers undergraduate degree programs within five primary academic divisions, including the education department and the schools of arts, business, engineering and sciences. The School of Sciences offers undergraduate degree programs in nine different fields, including biology, biomedical science, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and physics. The School of Engineering offers programs in chemical, mechanical, electrical, civil and computer engineering. Christian Brothers University also offers graduate degree programs in engineering, business, Catholic studies and education.

    Aquinas College

    • Aquinas College is a private, Roman Catholic four-year college that was founded in 1961. As of 2009, the school had about 900 students, 60 percent of whom attend the school part-time. Aquinas students can work toward Associate in Arts (AA) degrees, Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degrees, Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degrees, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees or Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees in liberal arts, theology, English or history. The college also offers adult studies programs in nursing and business.
