In California there are two state-run four-year academic systems, the University of California (UC) and the California State University (Cal State). There are multiple campuses for the UC system and the Cal State system, which are ranked statewide, regionally and nationally by various college ranking publications. Generally, transfer students from the California community colleges are ranked higher in the list of transfer candidates than students from outside the system. The system operates a transfer office specifically to guide students through this transition.
Although the California Community College system does not rank its campuses, it does keep a comprehensive data mart (see Resources). You can search data with parameters such as student retention rates, transfer velocity and demographics across all campuses, educational fields and courses of study. To gain an understanding of a particular community college or a those within a particular region, you can search the database. Since you cannot get a ranking, this data mart can give you a view of some of the student academic performance and history at a campus.
City College of San Francisco (CCSF) is the biggest community college in the state of California. 100,000 people take classes at "City College" or CCSF each year. The college encompasses a main campus and 10 satellite campuses across the city of San Francisco. There are 50 educational programs with more than 100 occupation-specific disciplines at CCSF. On campus there are liberal arts, business, international education, applied sciences and technology schools.
Glendale Community College, just outside Los Angeles, has 40,000 regular students annually, ranking it second in size in the state community college system. The campus, like all California community colleges, has an open enrollment policy. 10,000 students use the adult education program for job training. The campus offers associate degrees in a wide variety of fields and also generates regular certificates for students in need of job qualification or advancement. The campus sits on 100 acres in the foothills of the San Rafael Mountains.
