Community Colleges in Sacramento, California

Sacramento is the capitol of California and home to several community colleges. The community colleges are part of the Los Rios Community College District. The size of the schools range from small to large. They are beneficiaries of the Los Rios Foundation, which provides funding to the colleges and their students.
  1. Consumnes River College

    • Consumnes River College is a small community college with approximately 14,500 enrolled students. First opened in 1970, Consumnes River College offers 176 different degrees and certificates and 50 separate programs of study. Programs are separated into eight divisions, including Business and Family Science, Careers and Technology, Humanities and Social Science and Physical Education and Athletics. Consumnes River College maintains an articulation agreement with several high schools in the area, allowing high school students to gain college credit. According to the Civic Center Act, the school’s facilities are open to community groups.

    Sacramento City College

    • Built in 1916, Sacramento City College is the oldest college in the city of Sacramento and the seventh oldest in California. The college has programs for general, career technical, developmental, transfer and distance education. Sacramento City College has three locations, including a main campus in Sacramento and centers in West Sacramento and Davis, California. There are more than 25,000 enrolled students at the school, as of 2010. Of these, 29.9 percent students attend full-time, while the other 71.1 percent attend Sacramento City College part-time. The school is accredited by Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

    Folsom Lake College

    • Folsom Lake College’s Rancho Cordova Center is located 10 miles east of downtown Sacramento. The campus includes a student lounge, admissions office, campus bookstore and several faculty offices and classrooms. The Rancho Cordova Center offers many courses, including some in general education, computer science and administration of justice. For students with busy schedules, the college provides options for both online and televised classes. Students at Rancho Cordova Center benefit from the Folsom Lake College Foundation, which provides scholarships, volunteer opportunities and special events to all students of Folsom Lake College.

    American River College

    • The American River College was first established in 1942 under the name Grant Union Junior College, but changed its name to American River in 1965. As of 2010, there are 35,000 student enrolled at the American River College. The school offers multiple sports programs, including competitive teams in basketball, cross country, baseball and track and field. American River College also maintains four off-campus locations, including Natomas Center, McClellan Center, San Juan Center and Ethan Way Center.
