Southern California Jr. Colleges

Community colleges, also known as junior colleges, are two-year institutions of higher learning that specialize in vocational and associate's degrees and four-year college transfer programs. As of 2011, California contains 112 community colleges, 59 of which are located in Southern California. Tuition at all California community colleges is $26 per unit for residents and $205 per unit for non-residents. The California Community College system is the largest higher education system in the nation with a combined student enrollment of 2.9 million.
  1. Orange County

    • Founded in 1913, Fullerton College is the oldest continuously-operating community college in California and is located in Fullerton, five miles north of Disneyland in Anaheim. The campus is located on 83 acres and features 10 major institutional buildings. FC offers 89 associate's degree programs, 127 career certificate programs and 58 bachelor's degree programs that feature lower-division requirements only. The school has a student enrollment of more than 22,000 and employs 315 full-time and 480 part-time faculty. Orange County contains several other community colleges, including Saddleback College and Golden West College.

    Los Angeles County

    • Pasadena City College was founded in 1924 and is located 12 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles. The college offers 60 academic, 76 career and technical and 25 lifelong learning programs. PCC employs 435 full-time and 625 part-time faculty and has a student enrollment of more than 26,000 students. The school offers several intercollegiate athletics programs, including football, baseball and men's and women's basketball. In all, 20 community colleges are located in Los Angeles County, including Cerritos College and Los Angeles Valley College.

    San Diego County

    • Southwestern College is located in Chula Vista, between San Diego and the U.S.-Mexico international border. The college is located on 156 acres, offers more than 285 associate and certificate programs and has an enrollment of more than 20,000 students. Established in 1961, SC offers several intercollegiate programs, including football, men's and women's soccer and men's and women's water polo. The college offers instruction in several disciplines, including social sciences, humanities, arts and communications. San Diego County is home to several community colleges, including Palomar College and San Diego Miramar College.

    San Bernardino County

    • College of the Desert is located in Palm Desert, 12 miles southeast of Palm Springs. Founded in 1962, COD has an enrollment of more than 12,000 students and offers 57 associate's degree and 40 certificate programs in several disciplines, including anthropology, chemistry, mass communications and culinary arts. The college offers students the opportunity to compete on several intercollegiate athletic teams, including men's and women's golf, men's and women's cross country and football. San Bernardino County offers several community college options, including San Bernardino Valley College and Mt. San Jacinto College.
