Christian Colleges & Universities in Illinois

In addition to large public colleges like the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Northern Illinois University, Illinois is home to a number of smaller, private colleges and universities that are affiliated with Christian denominations. These colleges offer courses that prepare students for a career as well as classes and activities related to their religious faith.
  1. Lincoln Christian University

    • Founded in 1944 and home to 1,000 students, Lincoln Christian University is affiliated with the Church of Christ. The school grants degrees in fields such as Biblical studies, business, nursing, preaching and psychology. Internships are offered in many majors. The university also has an adult education program. The school sponsors six intercollegiate sports and five intramural teams and offers a number of student clubs. All full-time students must attend chapel weekly.

    Augustana College

    • Augustana College is approximately 165 miles west of Chicago in Rock Island, Illinois. Augustana is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and has nearly 2,500 undergraduate students. The college's most popular majors include pre-medicine, accounting and biology, according to the 2009 "Barron's Profiles of American Colleges." The college offers study abroad programs in Asia, South America and Europe and provides work study opportunities. Seventeen intercollegiate teams and 37 intramural sports are offered. There are also 13 Greek organizations and more than 100 student groups and clubs.

    Lewis University

    • Established by the De La Salle Christian Brothers in 1932, Lewis University is a Roman Catholic college in Romeoville, a suburb 30 miles southwest of Chicago. The most popular programs among the school's nearly 5,000 undergraduates are aviation, criminal justice and nursing, according to the 2009 "Barron's Profiles of American Colleges." Internships are required for some majors and available for interested students in all others. The university has 18 intercollegiate sports teams and 20 intramurals. Students can pledge to nine Greek organizations or participate in one of the college's 100 campus groups and clubs.

    Wheaton College

    • In 2010, "U.S. News and World Report" ranked Wheaton College No. 56 among all liberal arts colleges in the United States. The nondenominational Christian college has more than 2,300 students, around 90 percent of which are Protestants, according to the 2009 "Barron's Profiles of American Colleges." All students are required to take courses in Biblical studies as part of the general education requirements. Economics, English and psychology are the largest majors. Students can participate in study abroad programs and can also spend a semester studying in Chicago or Washington, D.C. Twenty intercollegiate sports teams are sponsored by the college, and there are more than 70 student organizations on campus.
