Located in Gulf Shores, Barry University is 7 miles north of Miami. Founded in 1940, the Roman Catholic college is home to more than 5,000 undergraduate students. Biology and elementary and early childhood education are among the university's largest and top-ranked programs, says the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. Chemistry is another of the school's highly rated major programs, while nursing is among the most popular with students. All undergraduates at Barry must take courses in theology to graduate. The university offers internships for junior and senior students, as well as study abroad options in 20 countries.

Established in 1968, Palm Beach Atlantic University is a non-denominational Christian university with more than 2,400 undergraduate students. The largest and strongest academic programs at the university are psychology, business and education, reports the 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges. The college also offers degrees in religious music and biblical studies, as well as in the arts, physical sciences, exercise science and a number of social sciences. The university participates in study abroad programs through the Coalition of Christian Colleges. Home to about 600 students, Clearwater Christian College is a non-denominational institution. The school grants bachelor's degrees in accounting, business, communications, English, music, mathematics, education, premedicine, biblical and religious studies, psychology pastoring and history. Students at Clearwater Christian College are expected to participate in some aspect of ministry, such as leading a music or ministry team during a worship service, participating in missions work or volunteering for Christian organizations or charities. The school offers internships in business, education and psychology and is home to about eight student organizations and six intercollegiate sports teams.

Found in 1866, Edward Waters College is a historically black university and the oldest private university in Florida. The college was established by the African Methodist Episcopal denomination with more than 1,300 undergraduate students. Degrees granted by the school include education, business, communications, computer science, English, mathematics, criminal justice, government, psychology and sociology, with internships available in most majors. The college has its own museum of African art on campus. In addition to financial aid, the college offers work study and co-operative education programs.
