RN to MSN Programs in South Carolina

Graduate nursing programs, such as the Master of Science in nursing (MSN), provide registered nurses with advanced nursing practice knowledge and skills. The nurse also learns to incorporate theory with current clinical research to deliver a more effective nursing practice. There are two types of MSN programs--an MSN with a nurse practitioner (NP) concentration allows the student nurse to specialize in the clinical field, and another type is a traditional graduate education in a nursing discipline. Both prepare the nurse for to take on job functions in clinical specialties, education, research or administration.
  1. University of South Carolina

    • The college is located in the state capital of Columbia. Nursing fundamentals such as Theoretical and Conceptual Foundation for Nursing, Research Methods for Nursing and Introduction to Biostatistics, are offered to master's students as part of either a full- or part-time program.

Depending on the subject or specialty chosen, the program will require 37 to 48 credit hours to complete. NP specialties offered include acute care, primary care or women's health, and other MSN majors include Community Public Health and Pysch or Clinical Specialist.

The student must have completed a nationally recognized Bachelor of Science nursing (BSN) degree program and must also have obtained (or be eligible for) licensure from the state of South Carolina.

The nurse must also have completed an applied research course or dissertation and maintained a GPA of 3.0 in all graduate courses. Other requirements include acceptable scores on the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

    Medical University of South Carolina

    • As the only academic health science facility in South Carolina, nursing students here enjoy access to some of the best clinical faculty in the state and a low student-to-tutor ratio. Although the MSN course starts as a multispecialty program, it updates and improves on previous core skills and knowledge, and eventually allows the nurse to specialize as an adult health, family or pediatric nurse practitioner.

Other non-NP areas include nurse educator and nurse administrator. Where possible, NP students can carry out 540-810 hours of precepted clinical internships in their chosen specialty. Courses may include Biostatistics, Advanced Pathophysiology, Organizational Theory and Health Care Management, Frameworks for Leadership & Interprofessional Collaboration, Behavioral Health Therapeutics, Introduction to Social and Applied Epidemiology, and Research Use and Evidence-Based Practice.

The MSN program may be taken either part- or full-time, and admissions requirements include a BSN completed in a nationally accredited nursing course, a 3.0 GPA including courses in statistics and an active RN license.

    Clemson University College of Health

    • The Master of Science program at Clemson is offered in six different sub-specialties, including NP concentrations such as Adult, Gerontological and Family NP, or non-NP fields such as child and adolescent nursing, nursing administration and education. The programs are found at the Greenville, South Carolina, campus of Clemson University.

Where appropriate (e.g. for nurse practitioner specialties), clinical internships will be arranged in relevant facilities, and upon completion of the course nurses are eligible to take national NP certification examinations.

Nurses wishing to enroll must have completed a nationally accredited BSN degree program with a minimum of 3.0 GPA and satisfactory GRE scores. They must also hold active RN licenses for the state of South Carolina. Prerequisite undergraduate courses include statistics, computer skills and health assessments skills.
