The school's campus is 38 miles west of Detroit and is home to more than 41,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The school's RN to MSN program requires two years of full-time study to complete. Students in the program can specialize in nurse practitioner or clinical nursing with an emphasis in acute care, gerontology, mental health, family medicine, occupational health, adult medicine and community care. Nurse midwifery, nursing management, nursing informatics, health policy, patient safety and teaching are additional ares of concentration available to MSN students. Clinical hours for all of programs take place at the University of Michigan Medical Center.

The Jesuit and Sisters of Mercy Roman Catholic orders founded the University of Detroit Mercy in 1877. The school's urban campus is home to more than 5,200 undergraduate and graduate students, and the university ranked 40th among all graduate school's in the Midwest. The McAuley School of Nursing at Detroit Mercy grants a master of science in nursing degree in family practice, nurse practitioner, health systems management, nursing education and clinical nurse leadership. All of the programs are available as full and part-time courses of study to accommodate the work schedules of employed RNs. Most programs can be completed in two to three years, and each requires a specific number of clinical or laboratory hours per semester.

A private, Seventh-Day Adventist college, Andrews University is in Berrien Springs, 10 miles south of Benton Harbor. The school has about 3,400 undergraduate and graduate students. The university's MSN degree is awarded in nurse education, a field devoted to training individuals to become nursing professors at colleges. In addition to having a bachelor's degree in nursing and registered nurse licensing, students applying the program must have previous course experience in statistics to receive consideration. Those admitted to the program spend five semesters completing course requirements, which include Christian medical ministry, healthcare systems, teaching strategies and disease prevention. The entire sequence of required classes is completed as distance education, either online or through video or self-paced written coursework. All students spend approximately 300 hours participating in teaching practicums to utilize skills taught in the program's courses. A research thesis is also required for graduation.
