The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine teaches doctors to be better prepared to handle the realities of their jobs in a new age of medicine. Bradford School offers short-term, career-oriented programs for many of the fastest-growing occupations in the world. The school offers two-year degrees as a medical assistant or dental assistant, teaching students the basics of medicine and how to assist doctors and nurses in a hospital or at a private practice. The health care programs are accredited and hands-on, with students learning in simulated medical or dental labs. The concentrated medical courses include pharmacology, anatomy, physiology and medical laboratory procedures.

At Carnegie Mellon University, the medical scientist training program is open to biology students who are seeking a master's degree or Ph.D. in biological sciences. Funded in part by the National Institutes of Health, the program seeks to train students to become physician-scientists in an environment that mixes graduate-level work in biomedical research with a medical school education. The training lasts throughout the four years of the master's and Ph.D. programs in biological sciences.
