Registered nurses (RNs) can work in hospitals, clinics, doctors' offices and other health-care settings. Students learn in the classroom and through clinical practice, and graduates receive an associate of science in nursing (ASN) degree. Students interested in the ASN nursing program must pass an admissions test.

    Bossier Parish Community College

    • Bossier Parish Community College offers an associate of science in nursing for students interested in becoming registered nurses. Before entering the program, students will need to take two semesters of general education classes such as anatomy, physiology and psychology. Students in the program will take 72 credit hours of coursework during three semesters. Classroom and clinical instruction includes pharmacology, pediatrics, adult nursing and women’s health. Students interested in the nursing program must apply to and be accepted by the college and then apply to the nursing program. Admission requirements for the nursing program include passing an entrance exam and computer competency test and completing a CPR course offered by the college. The school also offers a bridge program for licensed practical nurses who wish to become registered nurses and earn associate’s degrees.

    Southern University at Shreveport

    • Southern University at Shreveport School of Nursing has a 72 credit hour program for registered nursing. The five-semester program includes classroom and clinical instruction along with some general education classes such as chemistry, biology, algebra and English. Core coursework covers nursing concepts, nursing care of children and child-bearing families, and nursing issues and trends. Graduates will receive an associate of science in nursing. Admissions requirements include passing an admissions exam, acceptance into the college and the nursing program, and CPR certification. The university also has an accelerated LPN to RN program, which also results in an ASN degree.
