Career opportunities for licensed practical nurses (LPNs) are projected to increase 21 percent through 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. LPNs are responsible for various basic nursing duties, such as taking vital signs and patient histories, as well as helping patients eat and bathe. Some LPNs assist in minor surgeries and educate patients on proper health care.     • Tennessee Technology Center at Athens offers a full-time practical nursing program that is one year in length, or three semesters. Students interested in training to become an LPN enroll in such courses as basic math, English, pharmacology, pediatric nursing, psychiatric nursing, common emergencies and vocational relations. Students who successfully complete all coursework and clinical learning can sit for the state nursing exam to become licensed practical nurses. Tuition fees include the cost of textbooks, tools and other supplies. Program applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, complete a health and background check, and must have taken the ACT and received a score of 19 or higher in each area. Financial assistance is available to eligible students.

    Tennessee Technology Center at Morristown

    • Tennessee Technology Center at Morristown offers a full-time practical nursing program that is three semesters in length and consists of lecture, laboratory and clinical learning. Students take part in almost 1,300 hours of coursework, including first aid, diet and nutrition, pediatric nursing and medical/surgical nursing. In addition to earning a certificate in practical nursing, students also earn a nurse assistant certificate after 324 hours of learning. Graduates of the practical nursing program can sit for the state nursing exam for licensing. Financial aid and scholarships are available for eligible students.

    Tennessee Technology Center at Knoxville

    • Tennessee Technology Center at Knoxville offers a full-time, 12-month practical nursing program that is 1,296 hours in length. The first three months of the program are lecture classes, then starting in the fourth month, students gain hands-on clinical experience. Lecture classes are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and clinical classes are usually on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Courses include anatomy and physiology, mental health, geriatric nursing, pediatric nursing and nutrition. Students who complete the program can sit for the state nursing exam. Financial aid is available.
