Women's Health Nurse Practitioner Programs in California

Nurse practitioners are advanced practiced registered nurses with master’s degrees in nursing. They usually specialize in a particular area of healthcare such as women’s health, family health or nurse-midwifery. Women’s health nurse practitioners treat women for a variety of health conditions. Some provide primary healthcare services while others provide gynecological or midwifery care. They work in a variety of settings.

    • California State University at Fullerton offers a women’s health nurse practitioner program that prepares nurses to provide primary healthcare to women throughout their lives. The program is designed to help students develop interdisciplinary collaborative skills and to foster independent functioning in healthcare settings. Students must have a current RN license in the state of California, a bachelor’s degree and at least one year of clinical nursing experience, preferably in obstetrics and gynecology.

    California State University–Long Beach

    • California State University at Long Beach offers a master’s degree in the science of nursing (MSN) program with a concentration in women’s health for nurse practitioners. The program focuses on clinical skills and knowledge along with concepts of behavioral science. Students must have a current RN license and a bachelor’s degree in a health-related field.

    San Diego State University

    • The San Diego State University School of Nursing offers an MSN for nurse practitioners with a concentration in community health nursing and women’s health. Coursework covers a variety of community health, women’s health and nurse-midwifery topics. Students must be eligible for licensure in the state of California.

    University of California–San Francisco

    • The University of California at San Francisco offers a nurse practitioner program with a concentration in women’s health and nurse-midwifery. The program focuses on disease prevention and health education and counseling as well as clinical medicine skills. Fluency in Spanish is recommended though not required. The University offers some distance learning courses but some time on campus is required. A post-master’s program is also available.
