The program is designed to help students develop interdisciplinary collaborative skills and to foster independent functioning in healthcare settings. Students must have a current RN license in the state of California, a bachelor’s degree and at least one year of clinical nursing experience, preferably in obstetrics and gynecology.

The San Diego State University School of Nursing offers an MSN for nurse practitioners with a concentration in community health nursing and women’s health. Coursework covers a variety of community health, women’s health and nurse-midwifery topics. Students must be eligible for licensure in the state of California.

The University of California at San Francisco offers a nurse practitioner program with a concentration in women’s health and nurse-midwifery. The program focuses on disease prevention and health education and counseling as well as clinical medicine skills. Fluency in Spanish is recommended though not required. The University offers some distance learning courses but some time on campus is required. A post-master’s program is also available.
