One possible opportunity to pursue a nurse practitioner residency is through the Mayo Clinic. Nurses going on to pursue residencies at Mayo gain the advantage of training at one of the most renowned medical institutions in the United States. Applicants to the program must be currently working at the Mayo Clinic and taking graduate level courses at one of several Minnesota Nursing Schools. The residency program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission. The residency is a two-year program that results in a certificate of completion. Residents gain clinical experience in a variety of areas such as collaboration among health professionals, health assessment of families and individuals, counseling and teaching disease prevention and wellness, management of chronic and acute health problems and clinical rotations in various specialized clinics sponsored by Mayo.

The curriculum of the program mandates that students complete specialty rotations in a variety of medical field service areas such as pediatric care, women's health, HIV/AIDS treatment, behavioral health, healthcare for the homeless population and geriatrics. Residents must also take a number of educational courses in chronic disease management, immunizations and vaccines and after hours care.
