Nurse Practitioner Programs in Alabama

Alabama has many options for registered nurses who wish to pursue nurse practitioner licensing. As a nurse practitioner, registered nurses provide health care services comparable to those of a physician, according to the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. The programs in Alabama have options for full-time or part-time attendance, online or on-campus learning and master’s of nursing science or doctor of nursing practice degrees.
  1. Troy University

    • Students at the Troy University School of Nursing can choose to pursue a MSN or DNP for family nurse practitioner licensing. Admission requirements for both programs include a bachelor of science in nursing degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA, acceptable scores on the Miller’s Analogy Test or Graduate Record Examination, a current registered nurse's license with at least one year of experience, undergraduate courses in health assessment and two letters of recommendation. The MSN track admits students during all spring, summer and fall semesters, while the DNP track is conducted entirely online.

    University of Alabama at Birmingham

    • The School of Nursing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham confers MSN and DNP degrees in eleven nurse practitioner specialties: neonatal acute care, pediatrics, adult health, adult/gerontology health, adult/women’s health, adult/occupational health, family health, psychiatric/mental health, pediatric acute care, adult acute care and adult acute care with first assistance specialization. Students in the MSN track can enroll in the spring, summer or fall. The DNP track admits students in the summer or fall only.

    University of South Alabama

    • The University of South Alabama College of Nursing has MSN and DNP tracks for nurse practitioner licensing. Specialties for the DNP program include adult/gerontology health, adult/gerontology health with a cardiovascular specialty, emergency nursing, neonatal health and pediatric acute care. The MSN program includes the same specialties, with additional options in women’s health, pediatric primary care, family health and family psychiatric health. Both programs are conducted entirely online with only one to two required on-campus visits a year. Requirements for both programs include a bachelor of nursing science degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA, current registered nurse licensing with at least two years of experience, a negative drug screen and a criminal background check.
