Nurse Practitioner Programs in West Virginia

Nurse practitioners function as primary care practitioners. In addition to clinical care, nurse practitioners provide health education and counseling. According to the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, there were approximately 135,000 practicing nurse practitioners in 2010. There are programs across the state of West Virginia, which offer the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with nurse practitioner concentrations.

    • Mountain State University offers both a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and certificate for family nurse practitioner at its Beckley and Martinsburg campuses. The certificate is available for nurses who already have an MSN. Students can enroll for part-time or full-time study. Full-time students typically complete the program in four semesters plus one summer session. Part-time students have eight semesters to complete the program. Applicants are required to have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school and an unrestricted RN license.

    Marshall University

    • Marshall University has an MSN program with a concentration in family nurse practitioner. Students holding a master's degree can complete a certificate program for family nurse practitioner. The programs provide integrated instruction using the classroom, lab and clinical modes of instruction. The curriculum includes clinical experiences with underserved or rural populations. The MSN program consists of 41 credit hours and the certificate program consists of 29 credit hours. Applicants are required to have an unrestricted RN license in the United States, and the school recommends that students have two years of full-time nursing practice prior to applying.

    West Virginia University

    • West Virginia University offers a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with various nurse practitioner concentrations including family, geriatric, pediatric, neonatal and women's health. The school offers certificates in all the nurse practitioner concentration options for students who already hold a master's degree. Individuals can enroll as full-time or part-time students. The MSN program consists of 44 credits and takes four semesters plus a summer session to complete for full-time students. Part-time students can complete the program in six semesters plus two summer sessions. Applicant requirements include a cumulative grade point average of three out of four points on undergraduate work, acceptable GRE (General Records Exam) scores, three reference letters and an unrestricted RN license.
