Emergency Nurse Practitioner Programs

Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP) Programs allow nurses to have a larger scope of practice and expand their earning potential. Just as with other careers, having a Master's Degree makes you even more desirable to employers, especially in the competitive world of emergency nursing.
  1. Post-Master's Degree

    • Keep in mind that, even though these are considered Post-Master's degrees, you are only required to have your Bachelor's Degree to enter and some even allow for Associate Degree nurses to transition through the program.

    University of Texas Arlington

    • Finding a specific ENP Program can be difficult, and the majority of existing programs seem to be throughout the South. The University of Texas-Arlington offers such a program. Upon completion of the certificate, you will be recognized as an advanced practice nurse by the Board of Nurse Examiners.

    University of South Alabama

    • The program at the University of South Alabama has fast-tracked the full-time student to be able to complete his Master's and the certificate program in two years. This requires the student go full time through one summer, so five semesters in all. The University stresses core graduate classes and didactic ENP classes are available online. You will be required to attend at least two on-campus sessions, but this might give you more flexibility if you are working concurrently.

    Emory University

    • Like the other programs, Emory University's ENP Program is built upon Family Nurse Practitioner preparation, caring for patients across the life span. The emphasis in order to complete the certificate is placed on evaluating, managing, treating, and preventing unexpected illness and injury. This is a fast program, four semesters, but with heavy loads as it is a 55-credit hour program. They do offer a part-time program of study as well.

    University of Texas-Houston

    • If none of these schools are in pleasing locations, many more nursing schools offer Master's Programs with the Post-Master's Certificate in Acute Care Nursing. At the University of Texas-Houston, this program is only 30 to 31 semester hours. The focus of the program remains for acute situations as opposed to chronic but is not as specialized to only emergent situations. This is still a desirable degree for those who prefer the emergency department.

    Other Options

    • Some other Universities providing the ACN certificate include the University of San Diego, Rush University of Chicago, and Indiana University. This is just a sampling of the many different locations you can go to get such a certificate. Depending on where you live, this might be a program you can find a little closer to home if you do not already live and work in the South.
