Midwestern State University offers a master's of science in nursing degree program in family nursing and family psychiatric mental health nursing. For admission, students must apply to and be accepted into MSU and then apply to the MSN program. To be admitted to the MSN program, applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a current license. Both programs take about three years to complete and require courses in theoretical foundations, assessing health, research, pathological processes and contemporary issues in health. Students pursuing the family nurse practitioner degree also take courses in family therapy, group therapy and diagnostics. Students pursuing the family psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner degree also study mental health diagnosis, pharmacotherapeutics and psychiatric mental health. Students in the psychiatric program must complete an evidence-based research project. Students in the family nursing program complete a project or a thesis.

Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing offers a master's degree in two areas for nurse practitioners: family and neonatal. The family nurse practitioner program requires 39 credit hours to complete. Students study health promotion, preventing diseases, managing illness and developing advanced nursing skills. The neonatal nurse practitioner program requires 37 credit hours to complete. Studies include advanced care for children from birth to age two, promoting wellness and managing illnesses. Both programs include three study options: a traditional MSN, a post-master’s degree for nurses who already have a graduate degree and an advanced placement degree for nurse practitioners who have completed a certificate program. Program applicants must have a bachelor’s degree, a current Texas registered nurse license and one or two years' work experience if they are a practicing professional nurse.

University of Texas at Arlington has a M.S. in nursing degree program with eight options for nurse practitioner studies. They include acute care, acute care pediatric, adult nurse, family nurse, gerontological, neonatal, pediatric and psychiatric-mental health nurse. All students complete coursework in nursing theory and research, advanced classes in pathology, pharmacology and health assessment, and clinical experiences. They also take coursework specific to their area of interest such as pediatrics or mental health. Students can choose the traditional master's study program or a post-master's study program if they already have an advanced degree. To graduate, students must complete 51 to 54 credit hours and either a thesis, scholarly project or comprehensive exam. Program applicants must have a current RN license.
