The mental health nurse practitioner program at IUPUI is part of the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) track. The IUPUI master's program has been conferring degrees since 1945 and has a long track record of producing competent nursing professionals. Admission to the master's degree program requires students to complete two separate applications, one to the university and a secondary submission to the M.S.N. program itself. Applicants need to be currently licensed nurses and provide a copy as part of the application procedure. In addition to the license submission, students must also submit transcripts from all previously attended colleges and universities, three references, a recently updated resume and an essay that explains their professional goals as they relate to the IUPUI advanced practitioner program in mental health nursing.
The master's degree program in mental health nursing at IUPUI requires students to complete 42 credit hours of coursework. Students can enroll either full- or part-time as they wish. Students must complete 12 hours of core coursework in the fields of nursing research, nursing theory and leadership in advanced nursing practice. The remaining three hours of core work is the completion of a master's degree thesis. Beyond the core courses, students complete 27 credit hours in the field of psychiatric nursing. These courses include studies in areas such as advanced clinical practice, neuro-psychopharmacology, group interventions in psychiatric nursing, pathophyisology, psychiatric care with families, child and adolescent mental health nursing and pediatric health assessment. Students also take at least one course in how to teach nursing.
