Regional Engineering Colleges in India

India established most regional engineering colleges in the 1960s. The Andra Pradesh Institute, established in 1959, is the oldest, while the college in Hamshal Pradesh, established in 1986, is the newest. The government of India and the state where an REC is located jointly sponsor RECs. Through the years, many of these regional colleges improved and developed into institutes of national importance, as declared by the National Institutes Technology Act of 2007.

Half of the students of NITW are from Andhra Pradesh, while the other half come from other states of India and from foreign countries such as Bangladesh, Iran, Sri Lanka, Palestine, Nepal, South Africa, Malaysia, Mauritius and Tanzania.
