Andhra University started educating students in India in 1926, when the government passed the Madras Act of 1926. The Department of Marine Engineering, which was created much later in 1971, has worked along with the ministry of education, shipping and transport to train students interested in contributing to India's rich marine industry. Andhra offers bachelor's degrees in naval architecture and mechanical marine engineering, and master's degrees in marine engineering and mechanical handling.

The Indian Maritime College has 12 course components to marine engineering, namely the radar observer course, the automatic radar plotting aids, global maritime distress and safety system, ADAR ARPA navigation simulator course, liquid cargo handling simulator (operational and management levels), liquefied petroleum gas cargo handling, engine room simulator, marine power plant and auxiliary machine simulator, bridge resource management, and bridge team management. The Indian Maritime College has expanded very rapidly since its inception in 1992.

The Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERICAL) stands proudly in Calcutta, India. On the day of India's national independence in 1947, it opened its doors to young, ambitious marine engineers. The government of India has connected this institute with the ministry of shipping so that students can both train and find jobs after completing their study. Students can expect eight semesters of extensive theory and laboratory practicum. At the end of the engineering course, students take the Engineers India Limited FPO examination.
