Marine Engineering Colleges

Whether you simply enjoy sailing and working on ships, or envision a career for yourself in the Navy or Marine Corps, enrolling in a marine engineering program may be a good match. Marine engineers not only plan and create the structures that sail all over the world, they also maintain, improve and sail them. Becoming a marine engineer takes specialized education and training through classroom learning and hands-on experience aboard ships and in simulation laboratories. Schools across the country offer marine engineering and related programs for students interested in setting sail with their education.
  1. The California Maritime Academy

    • The California Maritime Academy offers a Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering Technology degree. The four-year program includes classes in naval architecture, plant operations, electrical circuits, basic marine firefighting, sea training, diesel engineering, turbines, steam plant watch, automation, power engineering technology and boilers. Core classes such as college algebra, English composition, calculus and speech communications are also required. Students get hands-on experience through three 60-day training programs at sea aboard training ships and a military or commercial vessel. Students also must complete an examination administrated by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Applicants must have a high school diploma, submit SAT or ACT scores and pass a criminal background and medical review check.

    Maine Maritime Academy

    • The Maine Maritime Academy Department of Engineering offers multiple marine engineering bachelor's degrees, including marine systems engineering, marine engineering technology and marine engineering operations. Classes in the four-year programs include ship structure and stability, technical physics, ship's maintenance, ocean survival, fluid power, steam generators, diesel power, refrigeration and air conditioning, power control electronics and ship's medicine. Students also complete general core classes in graphics, composition, precalculus and structured problem solving using computers. While on campus, students may participate in clubs such as the Sail Training Club, Marine Science and Technology Club, Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, athletics and honor societies.

The Academy requires a high school diploma, and looks at applicants' academic status, recommendations, extracurricular activities and community service. SAT or ACT scores are also required.

    United States Naval Academy

    • The United States Naval Academy offers a bachelor's degree program in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, a four-year degree covering topics in principles of ocean systems engineering, ship hydrostatics and stability, principles of naval architecture, resistance and propulsion, ocean environmental engineering, coastal engineering, ocean thermal systems, seakeeping and maneuvering, ship vibrations, ocean systems engineering design, advanced marine vehicles and structural engineering of offshore platforms. Students have access to hands-on learning at the Academy's Sub-Critical Laboratory, Marine Propulsion Laboratory, Ship Structures Laboratory and the Hydromechanics Laboratory, with two towing tanks, a circulating water channel and a coastal engineering basin.

The Academy recommends candidates apply as early as possible, with the best time being between April of the high school junior year and January of the senior year. Students are evaluated on their grades, an admissions test, medical examination, interview and mental fitness assessment.
