Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering Colleges

Naval architecture and marine engineering students study the broad spectrum of vessel engineering, ship maintenance and management, seafaring navigation and a variety of other topics. Given the highly specialized nature of the job and very specific training requirements, employment is easy to find for naval architects and marine engineers, who can work in military or civilian sectors.
  1. U.S. Naval Academy

    • The U.S. Naval Academy offers degrees in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. The Naval Architecture program deals with ship design and ship systems. Ocean Engineering concerns structures in or adjacent to the sea. The programs include technical courses along the lines of Hydrofoil and Propeller Design and Ocean Environmental Engineering, though also explores avenues such as the psychological relationship between man and the sea, and, in particular, men at sea. The Mechanical Engineering major, meanwhile, offers specialization in Marine Engineering.

    United States Merchant Marine Academy

    • The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy awards degrees in Marine Engineering and hosts a Department of Naval Science through which students learn the basics of Naval Architecture. Among the seven degree programs available at the school are Marine Engineering, Marine Engineering Systems, Marine Engineering and Shipyard Management and Marine Transportation. Students of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy spend various trimesters of a year at sea through a program that is described on the school's website.

    Webb Institute

    • The Webb Institute has been teaching nautical subjects since 1889. The school has departments for Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture. In the Naval Architecture program, students spend their first two years studying two subjects: Introduction to Naval Architecture and Ship Statistics, one per year. The Marine Engineering major is similarly focused, offering just six classes over the course of a four-year program. Unlike both academies listed above, Webb Institute has no compulsory military service requirement.
