Established in 1980, the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, or NAME, prepares students for careers in various fields, including design and engineering, software developing and ship building. Students attending this University of New Orleans School, learn with accredited curriculum and by applied and basic research. The School of NAME also offers two major research and education laboratories which are useful to students; the UNO Towing Tank and Computer Aided Ship Research Laboratory.

Students attending SUNY Maritime College, the country's first maritime school, will not only experience classroom learning, hands-on experience and practical training, but also learn self-discipline, responsible citizenship and leadership. The 55-acre campus provides students with the Maritime Industry Museum, the Stephen B. Luce Library and the Center for Simulation and Marine Operations.
Located in Boston, Massachusetts near the Atlantic Ocean and Charles River, The Center for Ocean Engineering of the Department of Mechanical Engineering provides students a hand-on education in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Established in 2005, this Massachusetts Institute of Technology School works closely with the United States Navy to provide students with the knowledge necessary for ship design and construction. Research plays an essential role in the Center's student training, as students are intellectually challenged to not only understand current technological needs, but to also anticipate future needs. To encourage research, the Center offers nine research laboratories as well as a hands-on teaching laboratory.
