Schools for a Masters of Architecture

Several top-name universities across the country offer Master's degrees in architecture. These graduate programs welcome students from a variety of undergraduate academic disciplines. The amount of time it takes to complete the program, however, varies depending on the student's academic background. Students with a bachelor's degree in architecture can matriculate through the program at a faster rate than their non-architecture-trained counterparts.
  1. University of California Los Angeles

    • UCLA offers a Master's degree in architecture that takes three years to complete. This program consists of a mix of architecture coursework, electives and design studio work. Ambitious students can enroll in joint architecture graduate programs; the school offers a joint master's degree in architecture and urban planning for aspiring architects who want to learn about social, environmental and economic policy issues. The M.A./Ph.D. program allows students to earn their Master's in architecture as well as a Ph.D. in the field.

    University of Virginia

    • The University of Virginia School of Architecture offers a Master's degree in the field, and students can choose from one of two academic paths. Path A is open to students without an undergraduate degree in architecture. These students can earn the master's degree in the field in three years. Courses include Introduction to Design, Structural Design and Building Synthesis. The second path of the program is open to students who have earned an undergraduate degree in architecture.

    University of Michigan

    • No matter their undergraduate background, students can enroll in the University of Michigan's architecture graduate program. However, the length of time it takes students to complete the degree depends on their previous field of study. Students with a Bachelor of Science in architecture can complete the program in two years and take courses like Architectural Design and Site Planning. Students from other academic disciplines take three years to complete the program, taking courses like Design Fundamentals and History or Architecture.

    University of Texas

    • The University of Texas School of Architecture offers a Master's degree in the field. Students without an architecture background earn the first professional degree, which takes into account their undergraduate coursework when building the curriculum. Faculty review these students during the program to ensure their work is on track. The post-professional Master's degree in architecture is for students who have an undergraduate degree in the field. Students can specialize in a number of areas, including sustainable design, preservation and architectural design.
