Schools for a Masters in Speech Pathology

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the demand for speech-language pathologists in the United States will increase by 19 percent from 2008 through 2018. A master's degree in speech pathology is typically the minimum education required for entry into the field. A number of post-secondary schools in the United States offer such programs, preparing students to work with individuals suffering from speech and communication disorders through a combination of classroom courses and clinical experience.

    • Located in New York City's Borough of Manhattan, New York University is a private, nonsectarian institution with more than 43,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The college received the 33rd-place ranking among all universities in the United States from "U.S. News & World Report" in the Best Colleges 2011 rankings. The college grants a Master of Science in communicative sciences and disorders for would-be speech pathologists.

      Required courses for the program include speech science instrumentation, production and development of speech and therapeutic techniques and intervention. The program also includes course work in motor-speech, adult language, pediatric, fluency and voice disorders. Students also participate in two on-campus and three off-campus clinical internships. To complete the program, students must pass a comprehensive examination or complete a research thesis.

    • Home to more than 42,000 undergraduate and graduate students, the University of Washington is a public institution in Seattle. "U.S. News & World Report" ranked the college 41st among all universities in the United States in its Best Colleges 2011 ratings. The college offers a two-year Master of Science program in medical speech-language pathology.

      Among the courses required for the degree are assessment and treatment of children from birth to age 4 years, childhood speech disorders, neural basis of speech, augmentative communication, research methods and pediatric dysgraphia. Students complete 10 on-campus clinical rotations and four off-campus placements as a part of the curriculum. Either the completion of a comprehensive examination or a thesis paper is mandatory for graduation.

      Students who have a bachelor's degree in speech pathology or a related area typically require eight to nine semesters to complete the program, while those with a degree in an unrelated field usually spend 11 to 12 semesters in the program. All students select one of three specialties in which to concentrate: early intervention, school-age children or neurogenic disorders. Eight clinical internships are among the requirements for the program. All students take comprehensive examinations at the end of their first year in the program.
