Tech Schools for Weather

Students interested in a career studying the weather can pursue undergraduate and graduate degree programs in meteorology and atmospheric science at several U.S. tech schools. These programs teach students about forecasting, climate change, Earth's atmosphere and weather systems. Graduates of these programs have the education and training to become a meteorologist or perform research in atmospheric science.
  1. Georgia Institute of Technology

    • Located in Atlanta, the Georgia Institute of Technology offers a bachelor's degree in meteorology through the School of Earth and Atmospheric Science. A degree requires 122 credits. Graduates are qualified for certification through the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Service. Students take courses in atmosphere dynamics, Earth system modeling, climate and global change, radar and satellite coverage, environmental data analysis and atmospheric chemistry. Opportunities are also available for students to complete a practical internship.

    Florida Institute of Technology

    • The Florida Institute of Technology is located in Melbourne. It offers a Bachelor of Science in meteorology. Students in the program learn storm tracking, weather patterns and weather instruments, and how the atmosphere affects human life. The college also offers opportunities to participate in students clubs, including the American Meteorologic Society. Local internships are available at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, and the National Weather Service.

South Dakota School of Mines and Technology

    • The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, in Rapid City, offers a master's degree in atmospheric science that focuses on weather and the Earth-biosphere-atmosphere system. Specializations in the program include meteorology and Earth system science. Students in the meteorology specialization take courses in synoptic meteorology, atmospheric physics and atmospheric dynamics. Earth science system courses include global carbon cycle, biogeochemistry and Earth systems modeling. Graduates of this program learn about solar and terrestrial radiation, radiative processes in clouds and global ecological cycles.

    Texas Tech University

    • Texas Tech University, which sits in Lubbock, offers a Master of Science in atmospheric science. Students combine academic coursework with laboratory work. Course topics include severe and hazardous weather, weather and human activities, general meteorology, wind storm hazards, radar meteorology and dynamics of severe storms. The program also requires students to complete a thesis and participate in research. Field experiences are also part of the curriculum
