The University of Northern Colorado's Audiology and Speech-Language Sciences department offers a B.S. in audiology and speech-language sciences. During the program, students take courses in audiology and speech-language sciences, but also participate in practica in clinical situations. Students need to take general education requirement courses, as well as courses specific to their degree to finish, though the degree does not lead to certification. To obtain certification, students need an M.A. in speech-language pathology, or a Ph.D in audiology -- degrees that the university also offers.
Columbia University offers its graduate and doctoral degrees in speech and language pathology through the Biobehavioral Sciences Department of its Teachers College. Students can opt for an M.S. an Ed.D or a Ph.D in speech and language pathology; the M.S. alone is enough to earn a certification in the field. Students need to finish 74 units of coursework, as well as pass the certification requirements for the New York State license in speech language pathology as well as the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's Certificate of Clinical Competence. The 74 units are divided between core coursework, professional coursework and academic requirements.
Montclair State University's Graduate School offers three doctorates in audiology: a post-bachelor's clinical doctorate, a post-master's clinical doctorate and a post-bachelor's research doctorate. As part of these courses of study, students need to take courses in auditory physiology, clinical methods, speech-language pathology and statistics. Students must also complete a professional practicum as part of their degree program. Students also study auditory processing disorders, diagnostic procedures and pediatric audiology.
St. John's University in Queens, New York offers an M.A. in speech-language pathology. Students in this program take courses related to their chosen career track, but also participate in clinical settings to gain experience. Alongside coursework, students work in the Speech and Hearing Center on the school's campus, which provides clinical services to the local community. To graduate, students need 15 credits in research methods, clinical courses and basic communication processes. Students choosing to write a thesis must enroll in the Masters Research course.
