Clinical Pathology Schools

Clinical pathology is an area in the medical field that focuses on the diagnosis of medical conditions, prevention of disease and infection and caring for patients. Clinical pathologists examine the biochemical processes of the body such as production of enzymes and hormones. Various schools around the country offer programs in clinical pathology.
  1. Medical College of Wisconsin

    • The Medical College of Wisconsin offers a four-year clinical pathology residency program. It provides advanced education on how to order appropriate testing procedures and interpret test results. Residents also learn management aspects of clinical pathology and how to consult with other physicians regarding testing. The intensive training portion is integrated into all four years of study. It is competency-based and includes immersion in the clinical pathology field. The program offers nine major subspecialty areas: Clinical Chemistry/Toxicology, Cytogenetics, Coagulation, Hematology, Molecular Diagnostics, Flow Cytometry, Microbiology, Hematopathology and Transfusion Medicine. Research opportunities are also encouraged throughout the program. The Medical College of Wisconsin is located in Milwaukee.

    University of Virginia

    • The School of Medicine at the University of Virginia offers an 18-month clinical pathology training program. It enables residents to gain an in-depth understanding of clinical pathology including the technical and methodological concepts. The program involves active participation in daily clinical pathology tasks such as hematopathology, microbiology, clinical chemistry and toxicology, diagnostic testing, transfusion medicine and immulogy. Residents are also able to complete free choice clinical pathology electives throughout the program. The program also requires residents to attend weekly and bi-monthly clinical pathology lecture sessions. The University of Virginia School of Medicine is located in Charlottesville, VA.

    • UMass Online offers an online graduate certificate in clinical pathology. The program is intended for medical professionals, medical laboratory personnel, nurses and individuals employed in the pharmaceutical field who seek to gain a broad understanding of clinical pathology. The program provides technical and theoretical instruction on human anatomy and physiology, clinical chemistry, genetics, microbiology, immunology, hematology, cellular pathology and other related areas that are related to diagnosing and preventing medical conditions. Courses from the certificate program may be applied to the campus-based clinical laboratory sciences Master's degree that is offered. UMass Online is based out of Shrewsbury, MA.

    Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education

    • The Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education offers a four-year anatomical and clinical pathology residency program at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In additional to working in a hospital environment, the program prepares residents to work in private practice and academic settings. The program features a small class size with a rigorous curriculum including lectures, seminars, conferences and journal clubs. It also includes thorough training in the frozen section laboratory. Residents in the program have access to a variety of types of laboratory specimens and materials from the Mayo Clinic's active surgical pathology consultation practice. Residents who have completed the residency program are prepared to take the American Board of Pathology certification examination.
