Schools of Architecture in Alabama

If you are looking to study architecture in Alabama, you have a few options. Two traditional four-year universities offer degrees in architecture and have separate schools of architecture within their institutions, offering students both quality instruction and practical experience in design program. Students wishing to prepare for an architecture career in Alabama who seek a less rigorous program can attend one of Alabama's technical schools to prepare for entry-level drafting jobs in the field of architecture.
  1. Tuskegee University

    • Tuskegee University offers a NAAB-accredited bachelor in architecture degree. Tuskegee's program is five years; the first two years provide students with a liberal arts, pre-architecture foundation, and the final three years provide students with professional preparation in the discipline of architecture. Students must apply to be accepted to the professional program at the conclusion of their first two years. The architecture curriculum at Tuskegee offers internships, field trips and guest speakers to help students bridge the academic and practical sides of architecture during their time in school.

For example, in 2010, the Rural Studio will design and build a playground at the 40-acre Greensboro Park. Through Rural Studio's Outreach Program, students from other colleges and qualified collaborators can contribute to some of Rural Studios programs.

    Technical Schools

    • Though technical and vocational schools typically cannot offer professional degrees in architecture, students may study related topics to prepare for entry-level and technical positions within the field of architecture. For example, ITT Technical Institute in Mobile, Alabama, offers an associate of applied science degree in computer drafting and design. The program requires 96 credit hours, limits class size to 35 students or fewer and prepares students for a range of careers, including architectural drafting. Remington College, also in Mobile, offers a diploma program in computer-aided design and drafting. The program takes a minimum of 12 months to complete and prepares graduates for drafting positions in architectural firms.
