Founded in 1969, the University of Alabama at Birmingham is a public, four-year institution with more than 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students. A two-year public school, Wallace Community College is in Dothan, 105 miles southeast of Montgomery. Before enrolling in the school's Associate of Applied Science degree program in respiratory care, students must complete prerequisite courses in anatomy, composition, mathematics, psychology, oral communications and fine arts. Once admitted, students spend two years completing the degree requirements, taking courses such as anatomy, pharmacology, acid-base regulation, pathology, diagnostics, mechanical ventilation, home health care, infant and pediatric respiratory therapy and life support. Students must complete four clinical rotations to graduate. Eligible students can participate in federal and state loan and grant, veteran's benefits, scholarships and work-study financial aid programs.
