Students attending St. Augustine College obtain an associate of applied science in respiratory therapy. This degree program is designed to prepare graduates for a career working in a wide range of settings, including hospitals, nursing homes and private care at the patient's residence. Faculty members work with students in the school's mock hospital, teaching them hands-on skills. The degree is transferable to a four-year university in order to earn a bachelor's degree in the field. The program requires 66 credit hours to complete and can be finished in two to three years.

The respiratory therapy program offered by Rush University allows students to choose degree paths at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Students take in courses such as patient assessment, pulmonary disease, mechanical ventilation and neonatal care. The goal of Moraine Valley Community College--located about 20 miles outside of Chicago--is to fully prepare its students for entry into the field of respiratory therapy upon graduation. The program requires 74 credit hours to complete and upon graduation, students receive an associate of applied science in respiratory therapy. The degree can be achieved in two years, and the program offers courses in anatomy and physiology, chemistry, medical terminology and developmental psychology. In addition, students participate in clinicals, receiving a glimpse of what their career will be like.
