Certified Occupational Therapy Schools

Occupational therapists work to enhance the physical mobility of patients within their work and living environments through customized treatment plans. Patients treated by occupational therapists often suffer with developmental, physical, emotional or mental disabilities. Occupational therapy schools prepare students to work in this specialized therapy field. Any program a student attends must be accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) to apply for state licensure or certification.
  1. Alabama State University

    • Alabama State University is located in Montgomery, Ala. and offers students a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy. This degree program has been accredited by the ACOTE and prepares students to sit for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, which after passing the examination students are then able to apply for licensure as an Occupational Therapist. To graduate from this graduate-level program, students must complete a total of 89 credit hours over a span of three years. Coursework within this program includes fundamentals of practice, patient care concepts, gross anatomy, disease and occupation, neuroanatomy, therapeutic measurement, community-based intervention and professional writing. Along with classroom lectures, students must also take part in various research and fieldwork courses to graduate. As of 2010, the average yearly tuition cost for Alabama residents is $14,000 while non-Alabama resident tuition averages $19,004 per year. Financial aid and scholarships are available for all accepted students.

    Samuel Merritt University

    • Samuel Merritt University offers a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy, which prepares students for entry-level work within the occupational therapy field. This program features a faculty to student ratio of one teacher for every nine students and consists of theoretical coursework alongside fieldwork and hands-on laboratory classes. Curriculum for this program includes foundations of occupational therapy, introduction to kinesiology, functional neuroscience, advanced pediatric clinical practice and various fieldwork courses. This program is completed in two years, three semesters per year and consists of 78 credit hours. Applicants into this program must have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants must also have completed the required prerequisite coursework, which is outlined on the Samuel Merritt University Admissions website. Applicants must also have two letters of reference and completed a minimum of 40 to 70 hours as a volunteer or employee in an occupational therapists office. As of 2010, the tuition for this program for all students (in-state and out-of-state) is $36,092 per year.

    Colorado State University College of Applied Human Sciences

    • The Colorado State University College of Applied Human Sciences is located in Fort Collins, Colorado and offers students a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy. This master’s degree is accredited by the ACOTE and prepares students for professional work as an occupational therapist. The program has been designed to teach students foundational and advanced occupational therapy knowledge over the course of two years. The curriculum within this program consists of classroom coursework, hands-on field practice as well as research. Throughout this two-year master's program, students will be taught within settings similar to professional occupational therapy firms. Applicants for this program must hold a bachelor’s degree and have completed all prerequisite coursework with a passing grade of “C” or higher. The Colorado State University offers a list of all prerequisite coursework incoming occupational therapy students must have completed. As of 2010, the tuition for Colorado residents is $21,074 per year while the non-residents must pay a total of $33,426 per year.
