Respiratory Therapy Schools in Florida

Respiratory therapy is a complex field that requires a minimum of an associate's degree to practice. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, all states in the continental United States require respiratory therapists to be licensed. Floridians aspiring to be respiratory therapists will find an array of educational choices to choose from.
  1. Broward College

    • Located in Coconut Creek, Broward College offers a 76-credit program in respiratory therapy leading to the completion of an associate of science degree. The program, which is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) through the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC), includes instruction in microbiology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology and medical terminology in addition to traditional respiratory therapy courses. The program starts annually in August. During the first semester, classes meet two days per week. Classes meet four days per week for the remainder of the program. To be considered for admission, applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5.

    Valencia Community College

    • Valencia Community College, located in Orlando, offers a two-year program in respiratory therapy accredited by CAAHEP through CoARC leading to the completion of an associate in science degree. Students learn how to care for the respiratory needs of a variety of patients, including pediatric, neonatal, critical care and geriatric patients. In addition to training in the classroom, students participate in clinical rotations at area hospitals. During clinical rotations, students administer treatment to patients under the supervision and direction of licensed respiratory therapists.

    Santa Fe College

    • Located in Gainesville, Santa Fe College offers a two-year program in respiratory therapy leading to the completion of an associate in science degree. The program, which is accredited by CAAHEP through CoARC, includes instruction in the diagnosis of respiratory problems and treatment of respiratory diseases. Students learn how to work in a variety of settings, including acute care and home health care. In addition to instruction in the classroom and clinical setting, students receive instruction and practice in the college's laboratory with the human patient simulator, a mannequin that mimics the response of a real patient.
