Schools for a Respiratory Therapist

Respiratory therapists, also known as respiratory care practitioners, evaluate and care for people with respiratory and breathing problems. Respiratory therapists keep a full-time work schedule with hours that accommodate the seven-day, round-the-clock operations of a hospital. Requirements for practice in the continental United States include an associate's degree, certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) and a state license. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' May 2008 data, nationwide, respiratory therapists earned a median annual salary of $52,200.

Graduates who earn a "C" or better in all courses receive an associate of applied science degree and qualify to take the National Board for Respiratory Care certification exams. Requirements for admission include proof of a physical examination and completion of nine credit hours of prerequisite courses, such as English composition I and II and mathematics for respiratory therapy.

    Roane State Community College

    • Roane State Community College in East Tennessee offers an associate's degree in respiratory therapy at the West Knoxville campus. The five-semester program totals 72 credit hours combining classroom and lab-based instruction with hands-on clinical work. Graduates may take the advanced-level exams for certification with the National Board for Respiratory Care. Program admission requirements state students must complete a 10-hour observation in a respiratory therapy department at a hospital and complete prerequisite general-education courses, along with anatomy and physiology I and a minimum of eight credit hours in mathematics, English composition, liberal arts and science with a minimum grade point average of 2.50.

    San Joaquin Valley College

    • San Joaquin Valley College offers the respiratory therapy program at its Bakersfield, Rancho Cordova, Rancho Cucamonga and Visalia campuses, in the north, central and southern regions of the state's coast. The two-year curriculum includes more than 900 hours of hands-on clinical work and classroom lectures in science, computer and pharmacology topics. Students learn techniques for the monitoring and assessment of patients' lung function. The program satisfies educational requirements for the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) and Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) designations from the National Board for Respiratory Care.
