Respiratory therapists are responsible for the primary care of patients with breathing disorders. They work under the supervision of a physician, and often supervise respiratory care technicians. Therapists conduct diagnostic testing, implement or alter plans of therapy, provide palliative care to those with chronic disorders and educational support for in-home care.

    • The only respiratory therapy program available in Washington itself is offered by the Community College of the District of Columbia. The College of Nursing and Allied Health administers the program, which awards an associate degree. The school is located at the CCDC Center, 801 North Capitol Street NW in Washington.

    Community College of Northern Virginia

    • Outside of the District of Columbia, the closest accredited program is at the medical campus of the Community College of North Virginia (NOVA). The campus is located in Springfield, Virginia, 13 miles southwest of Washington. Instruction includes hands-on clinical practice as well as classroom instruction, and the school offers a favorable student-teacher ratio.

    Prince George's Community College

    • Prince George's Community College is located in the town of Largo, Maryland, 18 miles east of Washington. The college's respiratory therapy program is delivered by the Allied Health department, which awards an associate degree. Credits may be transferred to universities in the area by students choosing to pursue a bachelor's degree.

    Baltimore City Community College

    • Baltimore City Community College is located in Baltimore, Maryland, approximately 40 miles northeast of Washington. Its respiratory therapy program is offered through the Nursing and Allied Health department, located in the school's Liberty campus.

    Community College of Baltimore County

    • The Community College of Baltimore County offers a respiratory therapy program at its Essex location, 48 miles northeast of Washington. Students of the program receive clinical experience in a variety of settings to provide the broadest possible base of experience. The program awards an associate degree in science.
