Course offerings for the respiratory therapy degree program include basic respiratory care procedures, airway management, mechanical ventilation, and long term and preventive care. In addition, students participate in clinical practice, learning hands-on skills. As of 2010, tuition at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is $210 per credit hour.     University of South Alabama

    • The University of South Alabama has a 25-year history of training respiratory therapists. Upon graduation, students receive a Bachelor of Science in Cardiorespiratory Sciences and are qualified to work in a wide variety of settings. In addition to the required general education studies, students take courses in infectious disease, care assessment skills, respiratory anatomy and physiology, intensive care and neonatal-pediatric care. In addition, each student must complete the required hours of clinical practice. Total tuition and fees for the 2010-2011 academic year are approximately $12,000. Financial aid and monthly payment arrangements are available.

    Shelton State Community College

    • Shelton State Community College currently offers an Associate of Applied Science in Respiratory Therapy, allowing students to finish their respiratory therapy studies in approximately two years. Students take required core classes as well as general education studies. Training is provided in areas that include anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, respiratory care and pathology. Graduates must also complete the required clinical practice. Tuition costs for Shelton State Community College are available at the SSCC website. The school offers a full financial aid staff to assist students in paying for their education.
