Government Marine Engineering Colleges

Marine engineers combine math, physics, materials science and oceanography with civil, mechanical and electrical engineering to work on the design of watercraft and offshore structures, says the United States Naval Academy (USNA). Marine engineers' work is crucial to shipping raw materials and finished products, advancing deep-sea exploration and mineral recovery, and operating and servicing marine systems. Three government-run academies prepare students for this professional work, as well as commission in the U.S. armed forces.
  1. United States Coast Guard Academy

    • Students who successfully complete the naval architecture and marine engineering program at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy are prepared for engineering positions as U.S. Coast Guard junior officers. Students may participate in a variety of six-week summer internships aboard Coast Guard or commercial ships. Directed studies research gives students the opportunity to perform individual and team research under a faculty mentor. Students also complete capstone design projects to help solve real-world engineering problems. The program aims to prepare graduates to become professional engineers both inside and outside the Coast Guard, and to pursue post-graduate study if they desire.

    United States Merchant Marine Academy

    • Students at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy are appointed as midshipmen and may choose from the marine engineering (ME) and marine engineering systems (MES) programs. Both programs prepare students to serve as licensed officers in a wide variety of professional engineering positions. Graduates often go on to become engineering officers aboard ships or to work on shore in applied engineering disciplines such as power generation and technical marketing, says the academy. The MES program prepares graduates to become licensed professional engineers. The Merchant Marine Academy also offers a master of science in marine engineering for professionals with at least two years' experience in the field. Applicants do not have to hold an undergraduate degree specifically in marine engineering. The program accommodates working professionals by using a combination of distance-learning and mid-semester, one- or two-day in-residence classes.

    United States Naval Academy

    • The USNA's naval architecture and ocean engineering program prepares to students to enter the Navy, Marine Corps, Engineering Duty Officer or Civil Engineering Corps soon after earning their commissions. The USNA naval architecture and ocean engineering program offers a variety of elective tracks for students to pursue based on their personal interests: coastal engineering, offshore engineering, underwater engineering and environmental engineering. In fact, the USNA says the marine engineering department offers more environmental engineering electives than any other academic department at the academy.
