The California Maritime Academy is a campus of the California State University and offers a bachelor of science (BS) degree in marine engineering technology. All students participate in three two-month practical training experiences on the Pacific Ocean: two on board the school's training ship, one on a military or commercial vessel.

The Webb Institute's marine engineering program focuses on marine machinery. The program's classroom and hands-on education culminates in a project in which students propose and design a complete power plant and investigate and explain its economic viability. In each year of study, all students participate in a paid, two-month winter work program in the marine industry.
